Mentoring and Social and Emotional Learning

Mentoring and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) are embedded throughout the Wild Minds day and form a core part of our specialist alternative provision. These elements support emotional regulation, confidence, communication, and readiness to learn, particularly for young people who have struggled in traditional education settings.

Our approach recognises that progress in learning depends on feeling safe, understood, and supported. Mentoring and SEL are therefore delivered as part of a consistent, relationship-based educational model, rather than as separate or clinical interventions.

Where appropriate, individual 1:1 mentoring is also provided to support learners who require more focused emotional or relational support as part of their agreed programme.

Mentoring at Wild Minds

Mentoring is delivered by trained, experienced staff who work closely with young people to build trust, consistency, and understanding over time.

Mentoring support may include:

  • Individualised, relational support built around each learner’s needs and strengths

  • Support with confidence, self-esteem, and emotional regulation

  • Goal setting linked to education, personal development, and future pathways

  • Opportunities to reflect on challenges, progress, and choices

  • Consistent adult relationships that support engagement and attendance

Mentoring is flexible and responsive, adapting as a young person’s needs change, while remaining grounded in clear boundaries and safeguarding expectations.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social and Emotional Learning is woven into daily routines, group work, practical activities, and reflective sessions. SEL at Wild Minds focuses on developing the skills young people need to understand themselves, relate to others, and navigate everyday challenges.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Emotional awareness and understanding

  • Strategies for self-regulation and managing anxiety

  • Building resilience and coping with change

  • Developing communication and relationship skills

  • Problem-solving and decision-making

Learning is practical and experiential, helping young people apply skills in real-life contexts rather than abstract classroom discussions.

Impact and Outcomes

Mentoring and SEL support young people to:

  • Build confidence and a sense of self-worth

  • Improve engagement with learning and daily routines

  • Develop healthier ways to manage emotions and stress

  • Strengthen relationships with peers and adults

  • Increase independence and readiness for future pathways

These outcomes are monitored through observation, reflection, and individual review, alongside wider educational progress.

Integration with the Wider Programme

Mentoring and SEL are fully integrated with the wider curriculum at Wild Minds, including vocational learning, functional skills, animal care, and practical activities. Skills developed through mentoring and SEL are reinforced throughout the day, supporting consistency and meaningful progress.

This integrated approach ensures that emotional and social development supports learning, rather than sitting alongside it.

Our Ethos

At Wild Minds, we believe emotional wellbeing is fundamental to educational success. Mentoring and Social and Emotional Learning are delivered as part of a structured, supportive educational environment, helping young people build the confidence, skills, and resilience they need to move forward.
