Specialist Therapeutic Support available via Wild Minds Pro
Mentoring and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) are embedded throughout the Wild Minds day and form a core element of our specialist alternative provision. These approaches support emotional regulation, confidence, communication and readiness to learn, particularly for young people who have struggled to engage in traditional education settings.
Our approach recognises that progress in learning depends on young people feeling safe, understood and supported. Mentoring and SEL are therefore delivered as part of a consistent, relationship-based educational model, rather than as separate or clinical interventions.
Where appropriate, individual 1:1 mentoring is provided to support learners who require more focused emotional or relational input as part of their agreed programme.

Mentoring at Wild Minds
Mentoring is delivered by trained and experienced staff who work closely with young people to build trust, consistency and understanding over time.
Mentoring support may include:
-
Individualised, relational support built around each learner’s strengths and needs
-
Support with confidence, self-esteem and emotional regulation
-
Goal setting linked to education, personal development and future pathways
-
Opportunities to reflect on challenges, progress and decision-making
-
Consistent adult relationships that support engagement, attendance and routine
Mentoring remains flexible and responsive as a young person’s needs change, while being delivered within clear boundaries and safeguarding expectations.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
Social and Emotional Learning is woven into daily routines, group work, practical activities and reflective sessions. SEL at Wild Minds focuses on developing the skills young people need to understand themselves, relate to others and manage everyday challenges.
Key areas of focus include:
-
Emotional awareness and understanding
-
Strategies for self-regulation and managing anxiety
-
Building resilience and coping with change
-
Developing communication and relationship skills
-
Problem-solving and decision-making
Learning is practical and experiential, supporting young people to apply skills in real-life contexts rather than abstract classroom discussion.
Impact and Outcomes
Mentoring and SEL support young people to:
-
Build confidence and a sense of self-worth
-
Improve engagement with learning and daily routines
-
Develop healthier ways to manage emotions and stress
-
Strengthen relationships with peers and adults
-
Increase independence and readiness for future pathways
Progress is monitored through observation, reflection and individual review, alongside wider educational outcomes.

Integration with the Wider Programme
Mentoring and SEL are fully integrated across the Wild Minds curriculum, including vocational learning, functional skills, animal care and practical activities. Skills developed through mentoring and SEL are reinforced throughout the day, ensuring consistency and meaningful progress.
This integrated approach ensures emotional and social development actively supports learning, rather than sitting alongside it.

Our Ethos
At Wild Minds, we believe emotional wellbeing is fundamental to educational success. Mentoring and Social and Emotional Learning are delivered within a structured, supportive environment that prioritises safety, connection and growth, helping young people build the confidence, skills and resilience they need to move forward.
